Indian film actor Dhritiman Chatterjee began his career in 1970 as the protagonist of Satyajit Ray's Pratidwandi. He has worked in many of India's "parallel", or independent, cinema with filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen and more. He pursues a parallel career in advertising, social communications and documentary filmmaking as well. He has received several acting awards in India and has been on the Jury of the Indian National film Awards. Otherwise known as Sundar Chaterji, Dhritiman is his stage name and he was quite active in English stages in Chennai. He was never a part of mainstream Bollywood, but in the recent years he had taken roles with filmmakers as diverse as Jane Campion and hugely successful Mumbai directors such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Mani Ratnam.
