Trivia:
The final scene where Santiago scores to win the game against Liverpool FC is the actual goal scored by Laurent Robert in real life.

Michael Winterbottom was the original director of the film. Production had begun when he left the project because the Producers demanded to finish the script prior to commencing Principal Photography.

The role of main character Santiago was termed to played by Diego Luna but he left to work on other projects. Kuno Becker actually called Diego before he took the role to hear Diego's reasons for not taking the role.

Earlier Stellan Skarsgård was cast in the film, but when Michael Winterbottom left the project, so did Skarsgard. He once said that "The only reason I wanted to do the movie was to work with Winterbottom."

Brian Johnson of AC/DC has an appearance in this film as a Geordie fan, noticeable before AC/DC, he sang in the band "Geordie".

Santiago, a right-footed player throughout this movie, shoots the last winning goal with his left foot.
