Two unemployed college graduates from Madras, Rao and Mary act as if they are a married couple to get a job as school teachers in a small village called Appapuram. The story unfolds into an extremely hilarious comedy as they try to cover up that Mary is a christian. They are assisted in their drama by Devaiah-a friend and ex-beggar in fooling the family they work for.

Actress Bhanumathi Ramakrishna was initially cast as the heroine and four reels for the movie were taken with her. She had sent a letter to the production stating that she will be arriving late to shooting because of her Varalakshmi pooja at home, but the producer became furious as he was a strict disciplinarian and Bhanumathy refused to apologize for her choice. The four reels containing her were burnt in front of her and she was replaced by actress Savitri, who was initially cast as Sita.
