Panchayat (1958)

This film focuses on the friendship between two friends Ram das and Charan das. Ram das has two daughters Roopa and Maya. Maya is widowed but goes to live with her brother in law Mohan. Roopa is engaged to Charan Das's son Gopal, whose sister Susheela is engaged to marry Mohan. Charan das gets entangled in a situation which goes to the court which is handled by Ram Das. Ram das respects law above friendship and family, gives a verdict against Charan das. Charan in a fit of rage cancels his children's weddings to Ram das's family. Gopal is furious with his father and leaves to be with Roopa. And Mohan refuses the conditions set by Charan to leave Maya to marry Susheela. Maya persuades Mohan to marry Susheela only to lose the whole family property to her, and face ill treatment. Will the families realize their mistakes, make amends and lead a proper family life?
