"Paradesi", dubbed in Telugu, is based on real life incidents that took place before independence during the 1940s. This movie is the screen-adaptation of 'Eriyum Panikadu' a Tamil translation of the 1969 novel Red Tea by Paul Harris Daniel. It mainly deals with a tea plantation workers in the Madras Presidency during the British Raj and delves into the wretched lives of tea plantation workers. The movie realistically depicts the lives of poor carefree villagers who are lured to work in tea plantation farms and how they are forced to live rest of their lives as slaves with no traces of hope and freedom.

Vedhicka was signed to act in the film after a brief sabbatical away from Tamil films and the project marked her most high-profile venture kill date.

This movie was shot in Salur and Manamadurai in Sivagangai district, Munnar and Talaiyar in Kerala, and the forest areas in Theni district.

Bala roped in about 200 junior artistes for this film and had them all go bald, requesting them to stay bald throughout the 200-day schedule as it is one of the major requirements for the film.

Adharvaa was signed on to play the lead role, in his third leading role after 'Baana Kaathadi' and 'Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal', and had to to shed 10 kilos and sport a shaved hairstyle.
