Crew/Equipment Visible
Tire tracks from camera equipment are clearly visible during chase scenes in London.

Factual Mistake
Barbossa's ship, the HMS Providence, flies a version of the Union Flag (aka the Union Jack) that was not adopted until 1801. The flag used by the Kingdom of Great Britain during the reign of George II comprised the cross of St. Andrews surmounted by the cross of St. George; the cross of St. Patrick was not added until the flag was updated in 1801.

Factual Mistake
Jack and Angelica jump into the Thames to escape King George's soldiers, and are shown swimming in clear water. The River Thames of the 1740s was a slurry of waste and a fall into the water could - and often did - kill.

Factual Mistake
Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and George II were not contemporaries. Teach was captured and killed in 1718, while George II was not crowned king until 1727.

Factual Mistake
Blackbeard's Jolly Roger featured a devil-horned skeleton holding a cup and spearing a heart, not a flaming skull.

Factual Mistake
Theodore Groves is referred to in both dialogue and the credits as "Lieutenant Commander". However, this rank wasn't created in the British Navy until 1877, and 'On Stranger Tides' is apparently set in the 1740s. Groves can only be a Lieutenant or a Commander, with the latter being more likely in serving as second-in-command to an Privateer Admiral (Barbossa).

Miscellaneous
When Phillip takes off his shirt to give it to Syrena, a smallpox vaccination is visible on his upper right arm. Although smallpox vaccinations were not available in the 1700s, various forms of inoculation were used as early as 1720.

Revealing Mistakes
In the courtroom scene, the judge uses a gavel (the small hammer). These are not, and have never been, used in British courts.

Revealing Mistakes
When Jack's hands are tied and he tries to sip from the hollow peg leg, he can't raise it very high and there is a sound like slurping. But Barbossa has already raised it much higher and taken a long drink. There should be nothing in the top inch to slurp.

Revealing Mistakes
King George II was German. He learned English when the family became heirs to the British throne. Most probably he spoke with a German accent, but not necessarily because education in different European languages by teachers from the respective countries was common for noble house in those days.

Revealing Mistakes
When Blackbeard holds a pistol on Jack Sparrow at the top of the cliff, its frizzen (the metal the flint strikes against) is open and could never fire; in the next shot, the frizzen is closed.

Revealing Mistakes
When Blackbeard threatens Jack with a pistol, he is heard cocking it, but when he holds it up to the camera we can see that it is only on half-cock. A pistol cannot be fired in the half-cock position, nor can it be loaded in the fired position, implying that either it is not loaded, or a technical error has been made by the film makers.

Revealing Mistakes
When Gibbs is being threatened by Barbossa, there is a "dead" man behind him. At one point, you can see the man blink.

Miscellaneous
Mechanical tuners were not used for mandolins until early in the 19th century. Peg tuners were the standard.

Miscellaneous
During the chase scene, when Jack Sparrow is fleeing from the Palace of King George, one of the pursuing troops uses a pea whistle to raise the alarm. The pea whistle was not invented until 1883, by Joseph Hudson.

Character Error
When Barbossa notices the Spaniards' ship, the Spaniards are very close to them, as there is a man in the crow's nest. He should have been notified of the Spaniards much earlier.

Continuity
When Jack wakes up on the Queen Anne's Revenge, the beads and bone that he wears in his hair are reversed. In the very next shot, they both return to their correct position.

Continuity
When Jack is running up to the lighthouse a mermaid is seen taking his sword he is later seen using his sword without getting it back from the mermaid.

Continuity
When Gibbs appears in the courtroom, he is dirty in appearance. When Gibbs and Jack are in the back of the jail carriage, Gibbs is all cleaned up. Then later, you see him dirty again.

Continuity
In the final scene between Jack Sparrow and Angelica, her hair moves around between shots. When the camera is over her left shoulder, on Jack, the left side of her neck / shoulder is visible, as well as the earring in her left ear, but from all other camera angles, her neck and the left earring are complete hidden from view by her hair.

Continuity
At the end of the movie Barbossa becomes captain of the Queen Anne's Revenge. We see him ripping up a letter twice, thus the letter would be in four pieces. We see a shot of the pieces flying away in the wind, however there are many more than four.

Continuity
When Phillip begins to carry Syrena, the leaves an dirt on her legs changes dramatically between shots.
Trivia:
A sequel, titled Dead Men Tell No Tales, is scheduled to be released on July 7, 2017.

The real life pirate Blackbeard did indeed have a ship called the Queen Anne's Revenge. It was a vessel that he'd captured from the French navy and renamed.

This film does make an actual reference to Blackbeard's historical death, in which he was beheaded and then had his head hung from the bow of his own ship.

As of May 20, 2011, this installment has the shortest run-time of the "Pirates" series, which is 136 minutes.

The title was revealed by Johnny Depp, in character as Jack Sparrow, at Disney's D23 Expo on September 11, 2009.

As Jack enters the Santiago, the camera flashes to a skeletal Ponce de Leon laying on a bed, surrounded by treasure. This is a reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland where guests see a skeletal pirate captain laying in bed, surrounded by treasure.

When making Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)_, the scriptwriters revealed that they placed the story in a thirty-year environment set loosely between 1720 and 1750. They also said that they did not intend the films to be entirely historically accurate. However, it was revealed that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides takes place in 1750.

This turned out to be the only "Pirates of the Caribbean" film to not receive any Oscar nominations.

Blackbeard says that his quartermaster sees things before they happen. This is an oblique reference to the character of Fedallah in the novel Moby Dick, the source of various prophecies about the death of his captain.

This was the first film to be released in the 4DX format in Mexico and in the Western Hemisphere, which is only available at select Cinépolis theaters. 4DX features strobe lights, tilting seats, blowing wind and fog and odor effects.

The name of 'Syrena' means mermaid in Spanish. The origin of 'Syrena' is Greek, from Homer's epic Odyssey. The songs of 'syrenas' used to lure sailors to their island where they were killed.

Johnny Depp bought new water proof jackets for 500 crew members on the set to protect them from the cold weather. He spent a total of $64,200 from his own pocket.

In May 2010, Disney announced that this movie will be filmed using 3-D cameras. The special effects, however, will be rendered in 2-D then converted to 3-D to keep the budget lower.

Penélope Cruz was the only choice for the role of Angelica. She agreed to the role without reading the script.

As in the previous "Pirates" movies, Barbossa's penchant for apples is glimpsed in this one as well--this time, he treats himself to an apple wedge at his captain's table aboard the Providence.

Johnny Depp said he agreed to star in this, before "there was a script or anything".

This is the only "Pirates" film to not be directed by Gore Verbinski.

After Walt Disney's chairman of 38 years, Dick Cook was fired, Johnny Depp talked to LA Times and said his enthusiasm for the fourth Pirates movie had reduced after Cook left the project. "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "It was all born in that office." One of the reasons Johnny Depp committed to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was because he trusted Cook, who supported him while "others at the studio were less than enthusiastic about my interpretation of the character, Dick was there from the first moment. He trusted me."

Oren Aviv said Disney had chosen to scale this movie down from the former in the series; "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger. The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie

Blackbeard's ship, The Queen Anne's Revenge, is actually a modified version of The Black Pearl, one of the vital ships in the series. The Sunset, as it is called in real life, was used in the latter two parts of the first trilogy and in 2010 redesigned to portray the Queen Anne's Revenge in this installment. The biggest change was above deck. The back was cut off to deck level and rebuilt again in two stories.

This film budget had to be scaled down to no more than $200 million (the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) budget was close to $250 million). This was mandated by studio president Rich Ross (who replaced the fired Dick Cook) in addition to the then 2008 economic slowdown in the US.

Jerry Bruckheimer gave strict instructions to casting directors that actresses auditioning for the mermaid roles must have natural breasts. During shooting of their scenes, they were not allowed outside until dusk in order to avoid spoiling their make-up.

The snake in the jungle scene is a king snake, and references the rhyme about coral snakes. Red on yellow kill a fellow, red on black friend of Jack.

Penélope Cruz was pregnant throughout production, but it wasn't noticeable until September 2010. As Penélope's baby bump grew, it caused difficulties in wardrobe, so the producers enlisted the help of Cruz's younger sister, Mónica Cruz. According to reports, Penélope filmed the close-up shots, while Mónica doubled for her in the long-distance scenes.

Megan Fox was considered for the role of Syrena.

This film is loosely based on the 1988 pirate novel 'On Stranger Tides', by Tim Powers. The novel's protagonist is a pirate named Jack, but his character is significantly different from Jack Sparrow.

During filming in London a 'Jack Sparrow' impersonator just walked onto the set. The guards did not think to ask for any ID as he looked so much like the character (Reported in the English papers).

Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv said that this would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."

While filming in London in October 2010, Johnny Depp received a letter from a local 9-year old schoolgirl, telling him her classmates needed help to 'mutiny' against her teachers. He turned up with almost no warning at the school in full Sparrow outfit, but advised against mutiny.

At the request of Jerry Bruckheimer, Michael Kahn did some editing work on the first three months of production but had to leave due to commitments to Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin (2011) and War Horse (2011) movies. He was uncredited.
