Trivia:
The first character, officially confirmed for Star Wars Episode VII, was the R2-D2, the blue astromech droid purchased by Luke Skywalker many years ago, which also so happened to be Luke’s mother’s favorite droid years before that.

Supervising sound editor Matthew Wood of Skywalker Sound has a history with Star Wars and George Lucas; he got his start as an Assistant Editor on 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles', and was Supervising Sound Editor on the last two Star Wars movies, in addition to providing the voices of Magaloof, Seboca and General Grievous. He worked with Ben Burtt on 'WALL E' and collaborated with JJ on 'Super 8' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness'.

Lucas had story treatments for Episode VII (as well as for VIII and IX) which he turned over to Disney chairman, Bob Iger around the time LucasFilm was sold to Disney.
