Asa, a former Russian Navy sailor returns home to live in the remote Kazakhstan steppe with his sister and her family. He dreams of becoming a herdsman and owning his own ranch and hopes of marrying Tulpan, the daughter of a neighboring family and the only eligible young woman in the area. Her parents are unwilling to marry their daughter to an unemployed man and Tulpan is attracted to Asa.
