The film tells the story of the seven-year hunt by forensic specialist Viktor Burakov for the person who mutilated and murdered over 50 people of both sexes, 35 of whom were below the age of 18. Burakov is aided, covertly at first, by Col. Mikhail Fetisov, his commanding officer, and later by Dr. Alexandr Bukhanovsky, a psychiatrist. Read More

Revealing Mistakes
When Leo confronts Raisa and she gets a closeup, you can actually see that Noomi Rapace wears green contact lenses to obscure that she has brown eyes.

Miscellaneous
Raisa's friend is taken away by police and drops her coat in the gutter. Different camera angle shows the coat on the sidewalk. Then it is picked up twice. After the 2nd time another camera angle shows that the coat wasn't picked up but a scarf, then thrown back down into the gutter.

Factual Mistake
Although Mikhail Nesterov is called a General, he wears only a Colonel's rank insignia throughout the whole movie.

Errors in Geography
Leo and Raisa are standing in Moscow in front of a railway station, it says in Russian: "Moscow Central Station". There is no central railway station in Moscow, but several stations where the trains leave to different directions.

Factual Mistake
The Gold Star (the highest title in the USSR) is worn on the left side of the chest above other orders and medals.Demidov wears his on the right.

As well as being in the form of a crime thriller, the movie depicts Soviet propaganda and bureaucracy that contributed to the failure of the then-current law enforcement agencies to capture the killer; Chikatilo's crimes were not widely reported for fear of revealing that such things ever happened in the USSR. Also, the killer was shielded from investigation because he was a member of the Communist Party. All this changed under the political reforms of glasnost and Perestroika, and the investigation began to make progress.
