This was the third Guru in which Mithun Chakraborty acted in. He starred in the 1989 one and a Bengali film of the same title.

A.R. Rahman composed the tune for the song "Maiyya Maiyya" while on a tour in Toronto. Later, when he went for the Hajj in Mecca, he was intrigued by a man near a river who kept on saying "maiyya" ("water" in Arabic). Impressed by how Indian the word sounded, he asked lyricist Gulzar to incorporate the word into the tune. He also personally trained Lebanese singer Maryem Tollar to sing the song.

A.R. Rahman dedicated the song "Tere Bina" to the memory of the renowned qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Certain techniques are slowly changed within the film to mark the passing of time and the growth of Guru as an individual: - When Guru is a young man in Turkey, the camera is handheld and in perpetual motion, giving Guru and that period of his life a racy, edgy feel. As he ages, the camera movements become smoother and towards the end of the film the camera is almost stationary. - The editing closely follows the above concept: the young Guru is shown in quick cuts and as Guru grows older the editing is smoother and becomes less frequent. - Lighting also changes with the times In Turkey, direct and specular lights were initially used to capture the aura of a foreign land, thus producing a sepia-yellow phase. Then the lighting changed to the more directionless soft light seen in the early and middle 1960s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, tube lights came into style, thus producing a dramatic cyan-green light needed for the climax.

The first Bollywood film to have its world premiere in Canada.

Composer A.R. Rahman bought an accordion while on a trip in Hong Kong. The music from this accordion can be heard throughout the film.

Inspired by the life and works of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani.

S. Bharathi, a lawyer in real life, plays the role of a marriage registrar in the movie.

John Abraham was offered the role of Shyam Saxena but had to turn it down due to date problems.

According to his memoirs Nigel Havers auditioned for a role in the movie.

While practicing for the scene where Aishwarya rides a bicycle, her skirt got caught in the bicycle chain, losing her balance and smashing into a "No Parking" board. Aishwarya fell and had a few bruises on her hands and feet, so filming had to be suspended for a few hours while she got first aid.

The song "Tere Bina" written by A.R Rahman was dedicated to the memory of the renowned qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The engagement of the film's lead actors Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan was announced two days after the film's release.

The film is inspired by the life and works of business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani.
